I purchased all these things at the Sunday flea market here in Washington NC. In some ways I can compare our market to a tianguis, a name for a native market in Mexico and Guatemala. Some of these markets in Central America go back thousands of years and have been held in the same place on the same day for all that time.
Our Hispanic population is fairly recent, of course, some of the items that I like to buy as illustrated in my photo are:
Cacao, the seeds that make chocolate, I roast mine and grind with my coffee. in the same plate are cinnamon sticks. The green things are cactus pads or leaves called nopales. They have become one of my favorite vegetables. My favorite way is to broil both sides and then top with cheese just until it melts. Good and very healthy. And oranges of course,at this time of year families go to Florida and pick oranges to bring back and sell here. Thirteen hour drive to sell juice oranges much more cheaply and fresher than in the grocery store. Nothing better than fresh squeezed OJ to start the day.
